 JUNK FOR THOUGHT

In this workshop we will consider how we consume and dispose of products. What do we do with all of our "junk" when it is no longer of use to us, or it is broken beyond repair, or not recyclable? And when we do discard it...where does it go? And why do we need all of this "stuff" anyway? JUNK FOR THOUGHT.
Broken toys, an unusable remote control, an old toothbrush, an empty water bottle, an outdated cassette... As Bicycle Artists, we will be making art out of our junk inspired by the illustrious Louise Nevelson.

JOYCE DALLAL

Joyce Dallal is an artist who works in a variety of media, from hand-made books and collage to photography, video, installation, and public art. The themes that resurface again and again in her artwork are those of collective and personal history, community, memory, and the evolution of contemporary cultural identity. She has exhibited nationally and internationally and is the recipient of several grants and fellowships. She received her BFA from UCLA and her MFA from USC , and is on the Art faculty at El Camino College. Today we are going to concentrate on her most recent work "The Toy Story" where she raises questions about how we consume and dispose of products. What do we do with all of our "junk" when it is no longer of use to us, or it is broken beyond repair, or not recyclable? And when we do discard it...where does it go? And why do we need all of this "stuff" anyway?

 MY PRINCESS CROWN

I think I got it in a goodie bag, and I liked it. I grew too big and I was all grown up and I did not like it anymore. We still kept it and sometimes I used it but I didn't like it anymore so I just decided to put it in my project.

 RED FEATHER PEN
I got this at my best friend Juliet's Birthday Party. It was a a party favor. I used this feather pen to write in my special diary. I wrote all my secrets with it. Then it got old, I got bored and didn't want to use it anymore.

 PUFF PASTRY BOX
We got this from the Grocery Store. My dad used it to make beef Wellington. It became trash since yesterday...

 ONE HOT WHEEL CAR

I bought at Target with my allowance. Back then I was into Hot Wheels. I liked playing with it until it broke one day. Then it was boring..

 TRASHY PIECEY

My dad's broken phone and some old toys came from my home. I played with them. I was bored with them or they were broken.

 JEWELRY BOX - ELMER'S GLUE

I picked out an eagle & shield necklace as a price for doing a play and getting a new belt in Krav Maga. I was keeping my necklace safe and sound in this box. When I saw a rip in the corner, I decided it was trash. I didn't want my necklace to fall out. - My mom got the glue from the store. I used it for art projects, stacking up things. That's what I like to do. It became trash when it was empty. It took 10 years.

 MY ZUZU PET

All my friends had a zuzu pet. I really wanted it. It was so cool. I went to Toysrus and picked one with my mom. I slept with it for a month, made a special bed in my bed. I played with it at school and raced it with my friends' zuzu pets. One day everyone stopped playing with it. It wasn't so much fun to play alone. So I put it in one of my toy boxes and never touched it again until today.
